October Update: Elections & Investing, Open Enrollment Checklist, Investing During Falling Rates, Stocks Presentation

We hope you are enjoying October. This month’s update covers some timely topics. The material has also been saved to your Money vault/ articles folder so you can reference it later.

Elections and Investing Key Observations – YChart’s election guide provides valuable data. Below are some good things to know:

  • The stock market is often more volatile right before elections

  • The stock market has grown over both democratic and republican presidents

  • Staying invested has generated superior investment returns to investing only when your preferred party is in power or getting out during election years

  • The stock market has performed well most of the time under a divided government

A Checklist for Open Enrollment Season from Morningstar - For most people, the last few months of the calendar year represent a good opportunity to update employee benefit options. The checklist provides a starter guide. If you would like help here, just let us know.

Opportunities for Income Investors: Going Beyond Cash from Hartford Funds – The author points out that stocks have historically outperformed bonds and cash over the long term and during periods of rate cuts. This information can be timely with more fed rate cuts likely occurring over the next year.

The Challenges and Opportunities in Stocks Zoom Only Presentation On Wednesday, November 13th at 5:30 pm CST (6:30 pm EST)- I am presenting to the Austin/San Antonio, Cleveland, and New York City American Association of Individual Investor (AAII) Chapters. Below are some items I will cover:

  • How stock bear markets and recessions are often related to one another

  • How stocks often perform during periods of falling rates

  • If value, small-cap, momentum, growth, and quality funds look attractive today

  • Individual stocks that warrant consideration
